Frequently Asked
Questions

What is Functional Nutrition?

Functional nutrition is a therapeutic focus on restoring the optimum function of the body and its organs through targeted diet and lifestyle modifications. Functional nutrition is the answer to many of the struggles patients face in healthcare today. Patients are supported and educated on what is going on in their body so that they can take ownership of their own health.

What is root cause resolution?

When uncovering the root cause, it is important to ask WHY, not just WHAT. Symptoms typically appear due to an issue somewhere else in the body, usually in the gastrointestinal tract. You can treat the symptom with medicine or work towards uncovering the reason (the root). When the roots regenerate, optimal health can be achieved. We use food as medicine to heal the body.

What is systemic inflammation and why is it so bad?

Inflammation can also be a systemic problem that affects the entire body. If you cut your finger with a knife, you may experience heat, redness, swelling and pain. These are signs of local inflammation. When your body is exposed to certain triggers or perceives them as bad (examples: dust, chemicals, gluten, corn, dairy) it can mount an immune response. The body’s immune response is typically an over-the-top response to what it is fighting. The chemicals that make up inflammation ensure the correct immune response to fight off foreign invaders. The problem is that when the chemicals that cause inflammation become chronically elevated then systemic inflammation can lead to many health problems such as: obesity, heart disease, ADHD, diabetes, cancer, hormone dysregulation, autoimmune diseases and skin conditions. Some of the symptoms of systemic inflammation are joint pain, swelling, unexplained rashes, GI distress or headaches.

What is the FIT Test?

KMBO‘s Food Intolerance Test (FIT test) is the most sensitive food test available using patented technology. The multiple pathway approach allows us to look at not only food sensitivities but also inflammation and gut permeability all from one test.

The test measures an inflammatory pathway instead of IgG alone, which helps to eliminate false positives that occur with traditional IgG testing. Each sample is run with 15 standards and controls.

An easy to read color-based report will be provided with the results showing which foods you were most reactive to. We will work together to develop an individualized meal plan based on your results. The foods that come back as reactive will be strictly eliminated for 6 weeks and then reintroduced once your immune system has been given a chance to calm down and reset.

How do I know if the FIT test is for me?

It depends on your unique situation. Most of the time food plays a huge role in the chronic symptoms people are experiencing. If you have already done a strict food elimination and still feel unsure of your dietary triggers or cannot pinpoint some remaining foods, testing would be a good next step. If you have not tried a food elimination in the past we can work together to remove the top inflammatory foods as a first step. We can decide together which is best for your body and budget.

What Information will the Zonulin assay and Gut Barrier panel tell me?

KMBO has created a unique Gut Barrier Panel to check for markers of leaky gut. Zonulin is a protein that is synthesized in intestinal cells and liver cells. It is a key biomarker for intestinal permeability (leaky gut) and is the only regulator that is reversible through gut healing. Zonulin is one of the ways the Food Intolerance Test (FIT test) can check for leaky gut, along with finding a sensitivity to Candida and multiple food sensitivities.

In a healthy gut, the cell junctions are healthy and your body has good nutrient absorption. In a leaky gut, the intestinal villi are damaged, the cell junctions are loose and nutrient absorption will be poor. When someone has a leaky gut, bacteria and unwanted toxins can pass through into your bloodstream causing a variety of symptoms.
